The ‘Visible Thinking (VT) in the Museum’ workshop is a highly interactive international workshop for museum educators, docents, teachers, parents and others interested in learning how to create lively discussions about art and museum objects. Participants can choose to take either a one day or a two day workshop. Facilitated by experienced museum educators, Claire Bown and Gundy van Dijk, this workshop has been running successfully in Amsterdam since 2013. We are delighted to bring this workshop to the UK for the first time.

Visible Thinking (VT) is an approach to teaching and learning that offers opportunities to develop thinking dispositions such as curiosity, understanding and a creative mindset. Originally developed for classroom use, Thinking Museum has successfully adapted elements of VT for use in museum programmes and developed the first museum programmes to use VT in the Netherlands at the Tropenmuseum in 2011.

DAY 1       INTRODUCTION TO USING VISIBLE THINKING IN THE MUSEUM

We will spend the morning at the Jewish Museum London where participants will gain an understanding of several thinking routines through activities and discussions. We will also show how different types of routines can be used to focus on certain types of thinking with different works of art. This will be followed by an afternoon in the galleries practising the art of facilitating group discussion using art and museum objects.

Day 1 of the ‘Visible Thinking in the Museum’ Workshop is open to all and no prior experience is required to participate.

DAY 2         DIGGER DEEPER WITH VISIBLE THINKING IN THE MUSEUM

The ‘Digger Deeper’ workshop is intended for those who have already completed a training or workshop with us (for example, day 1 above or an in-house training) or for those who have been working with Visible Thinking for some time. Contact us to find out more.

This workshop builds on tools and skills covered in our ‘Introduction to Using VT in the Museum’ workshop (day 1). We will start the day at the Jewish Museum exploring how thinking routines can be used in different ways to develop coherent story lines. We will also pay attention to object/artwork selection so that participants will be able to easily select thinking routines for use with a variety of artworks or museum objects with a variety of age groups. In the afternoon further opportunities will be provided to hone facilitation skills through exercises in the museum itself and by exploring what it means to create a culture of thinking.
