Discover two of Amsterdam’s most famous museums in a 3 hour Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum private tour with an experienced museum educator.
Our Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum private tour starts at the Rijksmuseum and focuses on the works from the Dutch Golden Age of Art (around 1580-1680). We will follow the development of Dutch art from the origins of the Dutch republic to the founding of the Dutch East India Company to ‘Tulip Mania’ and beyond. We will look at how artists learnt to specialise during the 17th century and learn about the different artists specialising in portraits, landscapes, still lifes or domestic scenes. We look in detail at world-class paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Steen and de Hooch amongst others.
We will then continue to the Van Gogh Museum (a 5 minutes walk from the Rijksmuseum) to discover and explore the artwork of Vincent van Gogh who only began his career as an artist at age 27 and died tragically just 10 years later. Although now regarded as one of the world’s most popular artists, he only sold one painting during his lifetime.
Our tour will take you through his early works in the Netherlands to his subsequent journey around France – from Paris, Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers. We will look closely at how hard he worked to improve his skills; how he experimented with materials and techniques, and also his influences, sources of inspiration and use of colour.
Throughout this private tour, we will show you how to look carefully at art to discover details and information for yourselves. We aim to engage our visitors in conversation about the works of art or objects we are exploring. The Rijkmuseum and Van Gogh Museum Combined tour has been designed by an experienced museum educator and is designed to deliver a top-notch learning experience which is both fun and conversational. No two tours will ever be the same!
