MOCO Museum Private Tour: Meet Banksy

The Modern Contemporary Museum (MOCO) is located in the impressive Villa Alsberg right in the centre of Amsterdam’s museum quarter. The museum is a private initiative of Lionel and Kim Logchies, owners of the LionelGallery with the artworks provided courtesy of their extensive international network. The museum aims to display a wide range of works that would normally stay outside the reach of the general public.

Our 1.5 hour private tour of the museum allows you to step into the world of Banksy. Who is the man behind the wall? How has he managed to develop a global ‘brand’ whilst remaining anonymous? What techniques does he use to represent such big issues, such as greed and poverty, that others choose to ignore?

The extensive Banksy “Laugh Now” exhibition at MOCO contains around 50 original works by Street Art-legend Banksy. We will investigate Banksy the artist, street-artist and activist and reflect on why chooses to remain anonymous. We will also discuss different social and political themes in his work – anti-consumerism, hypocrisy, alienation – as well as his sharp humour and biting satire.

The exhibition features a large selection of his famous works (‘Laugh Now’, ‘Barcode’, ‘Girl with Balloon’, ‘Monkey Queen’, ‘Kate Moss’, ‘Bomb Hugger’, ‘Soup Can’) and few pieces that were rescued from the rubble of buildings that were torn down. Central to the exhibition is ‘Beanfield’, a painting measuring 2.5 x 3.5 metres referencing police brutality at the Battle of Beanfield in 1985.
