Thanks for a great time! My team LOVED it; the Nederlanders got to experience an old favorite in a new way and our visiting teammates got to experience Dutch culture beautifully (without killing themselves on bikes!) (Artful Looking Workshop, 13 June 2016)
I just wanted to send you a message to tell you how much we enjoyed our tour with Danielle today. She was delightful, so knowledgeable, and made the tour so interesting and informative. I would give her the highest recommendation. I wanted you to know how pleased we were with the whole experience.
Thank you for your excellent workshop. It gave me a lot of inspiration. I will recommend your workshop to collegues.
All the best,
Clavaux Art Projects
We had a great time! Two days full of inspiration, new ways to think and look at art. We loved the discussions and going through Het Rijks Museum and Het Scheepvaartmuseum with all the strategies. Learned a lot about motivating the public going deeper (more than 9 seconds) in looking at art. Thanks for these experiences Claire and Gundy!
Wanting to see the highlights of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh but having limited time and hoping to avoid ticket lines, we arranged via the Internet for a private 3 hour tour of both museums. Claire our guide was easy to contact, pre purchased our tickets (saving long lines and making both museums possible), and was delightful, knowledgable and blended the right combination of history, art knowledge and specific museum highlights to make the most of our limited. Absolutely worth doing this way!
We booked a three hour combined tour of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. Family of four with two daughters 17 and 12. Learned so much about 17th century Dutch art, taking time to really look at and appreciate pieces I might have just glanced at on my own. I recall in particular an incredibly detailed winter scene. I can’t imagine a better introduction to The Night Watch, contrasting the more traditional posed pictures with Rembrandt’s depiction. The Van Gogh tour was wonderful as well. My youngest spent the evening after studying the contrasting theories of his demise on the Internet, and I think came away with a sense of history as dynamic and unsettled — interesting not boring. Highly recommended.
While searching the internet for a museum guide during our brief stay in Amsterdam, we were attracted by the clever name “The Thinking Museum”. We were absolutely delighted to have found Claire! We visited the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum and were so glad to have her knowledge and astuteness of just what to see in the vast and beautiful collections. The pace was perfect, and Claire was charming and she deftly wove history and culture and the life and times of the artists together bringing the artworks to life. Truly enjoyable, and we learned so very much. Excellent from beginning (easy to contact via email, and tickets pre-purchased to avoid waiting on line) to end !
Experiencing art is an interesting phenomenon. A painting speaks in a unique way to each person viewing it. Each painting presents multiple layers to evoke thought–from the aesthetics to the perspective to the technique to the symbolism. Claire Bown gave me two museum tours (actually mini-classes) recently. She guided me through the Dutch Masters collection at the Rijksmuseum and then introduced me to the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum. Claire is an excellent guide and teacher. She leads but does not pull. She presents facts but then allows one to make up one’s own mind about the artwork. She helped me to “see” more of the multiple levels of each painting which for me was THE learning experience during the tours. The best parts of each tour were when she presented the artwork within the context of the culture and history of the Netherlands where these artists lived and worked. Why the work was painted became as important as how it was created which told me a lot about how the artist fit into his community. I had a wonderful experience with Clare’s Thinking Museum tours; she truly did make me think!
